Who Is Eligible for Canadian Citizenship?

You may apply for Canadian citizenship if you meet the following criteria:

Are a permanent resident of Canada;
Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the last 5 years before applying;
Have filed Canadian income taxes, if required, for at least 3 taxation years within that same 5-year period;
Demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French, if between the ages of 18 and 54;
Pass the Canadian citizenship knowledge test (for applicants 18–54), covering history, values, institutions, and symbols;
Are not prohibited due to a criminal record, ongoing immigration process (e.g. removal order), or other ineligibility.
